Prompt Chaining

A technique for handling complex tasks by breaking them into sequential prompts where each step's output becomes input for the next, guiding AI through multi-stage processes. Rather than asking AI to complete complex projects in single prompts (often producing subpar results), prompt chaining divides work into manageable steps: research, outline, draft, critique, revise. Each stage receives focused instructions and builds on previous outputs. This approach produces better results for sophisticated tasks, provides checkpoints for hands-on guidance, enables correction before compounding errors, and mirrors how experts actually work. Prompt chaining is particularly effective for writing, analysis, planning, and creative projects.

Why it matters

Prompt chaining dramatically improves AI output quality for complex tasks. Rather than disappointing single-prompt results, breaking work into steps produces professional-quality outputs rivalling the work of experts while maintaining your strategic control.
