Hashtag

A word or phrase preceded by the hash symbol (#) used on social media platforms to categorise content, make it discoverable, and join broader conversations around specific topics or events. When users click or search hashtags, they see all public posts using that tag, enabling content discovery beyond existing followers. Hashtags are particularly important on Instagram, Twitter/X, TikTok, and LinkedIn. Effective hashtag strategy balances popular hashtags (high volume but more competition) with niche hashtags (lower volume but more targeted audiences). Over-hashtagging appears spammy while strategic use improves visibility. Each platform has different optimal hashtag practices and user behaviours.
