Engagement Rate
A metric quantifying the level of audience interaction with content relative to reach or follower count, typically calculated as (total engagements ÷ impressions or followers) × 100. Engagements include likes, comments, shares, saves, clicks, and other interactions. For example, if a post reaches 1,000 people and receives 50 engagements, the engagement rate is 5%. Engagement rates vary significantly by platform (TikTok rates are typically higher than Facebook) and content type. Rates generally decrease as follower counts increase. A 1-3% engagement rate is typical for Instagram, 0.5-1% for Facebook, and 3-9% for TikTok. Engagement rate helps assess content quality and audience connection.
Why it matters
Engagement rate reveals whether your content resonates and whether followers are real/active. High engagement rates indicate strong audience connection, which translates to better conversion rates and business results regardless of absolute follower numbers.
